Teaches at Edge Studio Voice Over

Voice Coach and Marketing Expert Kristin hit the stage running in her first dance recital at the age of four… then spotted the audience and ran right back off. Much to everyone's surprise, she jumped back on a few years later, and hasn’t left since. As a voice coach, she loves figuring out how to make you shine, no matter what your background is. Can a musical theater pro accustomed to projecting to the back of a theater successfully “tone it down” enough for voiceover? Can an accountant set his numbers aside and learn to play with words? Do you need to approach scripts as an actor? Do you need a technical checklist? Do you just need permission to let loose and have a ball? What is your comfort zone… and can you surprise yourself by pushing outside of that? Everyone has a different style of learning. The most important thing is to enjoy what you’re doing. Her philosophy of working with kids is the same. Over five years of teaching youth acting, dance and musical theater classes for The Willows Theater and the Marin Theater Company in the San Francisco Bay Area, she learned that the most important thing is to find the child’s natural strengths and build from there in a positive and encouraging environment. As a voice actor, Kristin keeps busy recording commercial and narration voiceovers at her home studio and at production facilities around New York City (including Edge Studio!). The occasional on-camera commercial sneaks into the schedule as well. Recent VO work includes narrations for Disney, Crisco, Nikon, GE, Doubletree, Swarovski Crystals, H&R Block, Office Depot, Crest Spinbrush, the U.S. Army, Yale University, and lots of corporate training and e-learning programs; the videogames “Silent Hill: Downpour”, “Puzzle Chronicles” and “Enigmatis”; and commercials for Vitamin Shoppe, Ortega Tacos, Vertex, Alfred Angelo wedding gowns, Hannaford grocery stores, Paradise Bakery, Kaboom! and Peter Piper Pizza. Most of all, she is proud to have recorded a series of children's audiobooks for MitSo Media which received the highest award possible: a room full of pre-schoolers sat absolutely still and listened!

Wow! It was certainly all the website said it would be. I enjoyed it a great deal. The size of the class was excellent, making it possible to focus in on everyone's technique. We learned a lot, by what was being expressed by our coach Joey and hearing one another's reads. It taught me a great deal and the follow-up evaluation was key. I plan to continue my study with coursehorse...it was absolutely worth it. I'm glad I took the risk! "No Great Reward Comes Without Great Risks!"

MY GOAL My primary goals in registering for the Investigate Voice Over (IVO) class were to learn more about the qualities of people's voices and what the world of voice over entails. These goals were achieved! And I learned more about an interesting industry. IDEAS LEARNED Within the 4 hours for this course, I learned about (in loose order): - An introduction to the many different types of voice over categories that one can specialize in - An introduction to the industry - How aspiring voice talent can get started in the voice over world - Several exercises for students to practice in order to warm up the mouth, tongue, and vocal cords - Certain pitfalls made by inexperienced or untrained voice talent - More areas I don't remember without checking notes! PERFORMANCE / EVALUATION At the end of the course, with around an hour or so left, the instructor assigned each of us a script that we would be reading. We were given maybe 3-5 minutes to get a feel for the copy before we were summoned back to main room. The format for our read-throughs were as follows: - Student reads the script according to their best interpretation - Instructor provides feedback and suggestions for how to improve the read - Student tries to incorporate changes into delivery - Instructor takes the recording and adds appropriate music and plays it back The instructor takes notes about our voices and delivery, which he later writes up and sends through Edge Studios as your Evaluation. Watching the feedback and instruction provided to fellow classmates was one of the most interesting parts of the day—it's no exaggeration to say that one or two changes to a student's approach could lead to an enormously different (and often more successful) delivery. My classmates and I were fascinated by how something as seemingly simple as swinging your arms around when speaking could change the speaker's voice (by releasing tension); this technique actually helped several of us improve our reads. INSTRUCTOR Our instructor was David Guzzone, who's had years of experience performing, casting and producing. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to answer any questions that our class asked—I point this out because, as a curious person who usually has plenty of questions, I tend to prefer teachers who are willing to engage with their students over those who discourage questions. Thanks for an informative and interesting class! ADDITIONAL RESOURCES - The Voice Over Technique Guidebook that we receive from signing up was also a great resource both to preview before class and for further reference afterwards; while the class only takes us through Chapter 4, the entire book provides a wealth of information into specific topics about voice over. - The instructor mentioned a bunch of additional resources available on Edge Studio's website. FOLLOW UP I received a call from Kendra from Edge Studios this afternoon (students sign up for time slots to have follow-up conversations both to answer any questions that students have about their evaluations, and about about signing up for programs); she happily answered all of the questions I had, as well as providing additional insight into possibilities afforded by my particular voice and situation. I'm pretty impressed by the caliber of follow-up and care; this gives me faith that their program would be worth the investment. IF YOU TAKE THIS CLASS Having a bottle of water is handy for staying hydrated; bringing a notebook and writing utensil will give you the option to jot down many of the lessons that you'll learn. IN SUM This class provided just what I was looking for: a high-level, informative view of the voice over skill and industry. The evaluation that is included with the cost of class—while a bit nerve-wracking in the way any unplanned performances can be—was valuable for helping me to learn more about my own voice, the marketability of my voice, and those areas that I can improve with training. I'm now considering investing in Edge Studio's program in order to be able to do voice over part-time. Thanks, CourseHorse+Edge Studios!
