Kings County Distillery is New York City’s oldest operating whiskey distillery, the first since prohibition. Founded in 2010, Kings County makes handmade moonshine and bourbon out of the 115-year-old Paymaster Building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. We use New York grain and traditional distilling equipment to make distinctive whiskey. Our whiskeys have won numerous awards from the American Distilling Institute, the American Craft Spirits Association, and our bourbon was recently named #2 craft bourbon by Eric Asimov of the New York Times. We only distill whiskey for our label and we never buy bulk whiskey from any other source.
First located in a 325 square-foot room in East Williamsburg, Kings County began as the smallest commercial distillery in the country, with five 24-liter stainless steel stills making whiskey seven days a week, 16 hours a day. In 2012, we moved into the Paymaster Building in the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, just steps from legendary site of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the 1860s and the former distillery district of the waterfront. With traditional copper whiskey stills fabricated in Scotland, wooden fermenters were built locally by Isseks Brothers, and a corn and barley patch at a small farm onsite, the distillery is a model of sustainable and traditional whiskey production and one of the preeminent craft distilleries in the United States. We offer tours and tastings every Saturday.

The course itself was very good, we were not given the proper instructions regarding the meeting place and the person organizing the course was very rude when we went direct to the facility (which is the address we were given). We almost left because the doors were locked when we got there. Better communication is needed and rudeness nor appreciated.

This was such a fun tour and our tour guide was super knowledgeable and passionate about Whiskey! The tastings were amazing and the product exceptional. There’s a bar onsite where you can taste cocktails with the delicious whiskeys they make. Definitely coming back for some cocktails!

I thought the bourbon tasting was great! The tour itself was underwhelming. I suggest a short film or slide show depicting the history lesson. It’s so interesting and the pictures on the wall don’t do it justice. Or hire a struggling actor or comedian to tell the story in a more animated fashion. Also employees were talking in the back of the room which was very distracting.

Very informative tour. The best person led the tour; I didn’t catch his name, but he was so passionate about the distillery and bourbo that it radiates through his presentation. We got to taste 3-4 different kinds. Really awesome tour.

We had a great time during our tour. Learned so much about the distillery process and really enjoyed the tasting. Only downside is that we went on a really hot day and most of the tour is not in the AC. Regardless, I would highly recommend this tour.

I loved that this tour talked about the history of whiskey in America in addition to the distillery tour. The tasting was a great end!

Overall the tour was ok. My major issue was with the duration. It was advertised as 45-60 mins and in actuality was an hour and 45 mins, which isn’t something I would have signed up for - and it made us late for our next activity.

It was pretty interesting. I really enjoyed discovering this part of town, the history, and the building. Parts of it were a little slow and boring. If they tried to spice it up a little, it would be more fun.
