Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this furniture class:

In this three day class, you will learn how to make a shoji (paper backed sliding screen) that is a classic functional and decorative detail in Japanese design. To accommodate apartment living and as a learning project, each participant will make a moderate size shoji, around 24”x24”. All of the same methods used in full size shojis, 36”x72”, will be used in the smaller version.  We will also cover design considerations, choice of wood, paper and joinery.

Prerequisites

Sharpening with Japanese Waterstones Introduction or some sharpening experience and one previous joinery class with Mokuchi or some joinery experience

Tools

An additional $35 materials fee for shoji paper and wood will be required for each student at time of class.

Required

  • 6mm(1/4″) dovetail or bench chisel
  • 12mm (1/2”) paring chisel
  • Bench or dovetail chisel also acceptable.
  • 210mm or finer Ryoba saw (japanese two sided pull saw)
  • Dozuki saw (Japanese backsaw)
  • Marking gauge
  • Square
  • Hammer
  • Pencil and eraser

Optional

  • Hand plane

Refund Policy

No refunds for no shows.

  • For cancellations more than 16 business days before class date, student can be refunded payment amount minus 13% processing fee OR receive full payment amount as credit toward another class.
  • For cancellations 16 to 11 business days before class date, student can receive payment amount as credit toward another class.
  • No refunds or credit available for cancellations less than 11 business days before class.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.
